*UPDATED AGAIN!* I will be Repeating this session at #CEGSA2012 in place of “iPads in teaching and learning: New Perspectives on integration and Productivity”

Tomorrow on the 23rd of March-2012 I’m presenting on iPads at Flinders university . In this session I aim to talk about how iPads can be used to effectively enhance teaching and learning in any classroom. In order to do this, it is really important that we consider why it is that we are using this tool in our classrooms and what it is that we expect it to do to help our students to learn.  There will be 15 iPads on site and ready for us to use.  Thank you very much to the Australian School of Maths and Science for lending them to us.

iPads are becoming an increasingly popular tool for the classroom. Just as interactive whiteboards were five or six years ago. It is really important that we ensure that these tools are used effectively. Many interactive whiteboard are still just used as a giant cinema screens, for teacher lead activities and are not used to their full potential. This has led, in part, to a misunderstanding by many that these devices a purely for teacher led activities.  As this new and exciting technology begins to be adapted by creative teachers it is vital, in my opinion, that we approach this tool with a clear focus on how it can be used with teaching strategies which are ” responsive to the learning needs and strengths of students” (NPSfT 1.3) are meeting “the specific learning needs of students” (NPSfT 1.5) and I used ” to enable deeper engagement with curriculum and support a range of approaches to learning” (NPSfT 2.6 ICT Elaboration).

In order to help us to achieve these goals, we will explore several IPad apps in the context of the TPACK framework. We will also consider how deep the students’ learning could go by considering the apps place within the revised blooms taxonomy.  We will explore several websites where other experienced educational technology minded teachers have already begun this conversation so that we may get involved.  Obviously this is only an hours showcase and we want to be able to do this in masses of detail. However, I hope to at least inspire some thought processes that will help teachers to continue this exploratory journey on their own, after the workshop is over.

Apps that we will be using

Each of the images below will take you to one of the Apps we’ll be evaluating and considering in the workshop.  If you’re bringing your own iPad along then you might like to have these installed before you get to the workshop :)

Puppet Pals

Rocket Maths

Questions we’ll try to answer

  •  How do we know which apps are good?
  • Where can we find more apps?
  • Who’s using them and who can help me?

Hi Wing,  The event’s been sat on both my blog and CEGSA’s for a while. I’m afraid it’s fully booked this time.  Maybe next time?

hmmm i couldnt find science house, maths rocket or watch know learn in the app store :(

  • Wing Au

Thanks.  This is fine.  Maybe next time.

  • Wing Au

Interesting as I just downloaded all these items from App Store this afternoon.  Perhaps you may wish to try again.

  • http://www.teachertechnologies.com Selena Woodward

All you should need to do is click on the images above. That should take you to them in the app store :)

  • http://twitter.com/louisaguest Louisa Guest

ah I searched for science house but its actually called video science!  Thats the worst part of app store, you have to know exact name to be able to find an app

  • Wing Au

Yes I understand your frustration.  It was fortuitous that I clicked on each of the icons on this page first, found the correct name before I proceeded to download the apps.Take it easy :)

  • http://www.teachertechnologies.com Selena Woodward

Cripes! Sorry! I was looking at the image from the app store when I typed it in!  Hopefully you’ve found them all now.  I thought it would be helpful to have the ‘menu’ before hand :)

Hi Seleena, I know you from Flinders, I bought myself and ipad but finf/have found it very hard to get going on, bought afew apps now_though as everything is electronic its slow for me to get productive.
I have one big question, as I was rather dissapointed that my new ipad wouldnt read just any old PDF( I realise now I was hoping it was majic, lol, and thats just ridiculous) so in some ways it dosent do what I want…(scanned pics dont concevrt to text, duh) can you tell me why lecturers scan docs if it limits how we can access thm as students for time saving etc_as this will impact disadvantaged /special needs students also(and especially academics)
seems alot of the apps are for childrens teaching and learning, are there any secrets to converting pdf’s so i can get voice over to read them to me on the bus(as Im travelling 2 hours xtra a day on the bus at the moment_my car went bung.
    Another thing
I cant gmail the lecture podcasts or vodcasts to my ipad5 as the gamil server dosent allow over 25mb…seems like all the things I thought Id use my magic machine for just arnt possible, I am a little upset, I tried to reduce my file through handbrake and guess what it was actually bigger at the end(how was that dont know… can u run afew class’s at uni for new ipad 5 owners PLEASE but not during the week day as I’m on placement.
I dont want much do I
    Mary

    Hi Mary,
I’m a bit unclear on some of your points so I hope some of what I put below will help :)

    1)  PDFs.  A quick ‘google’ pointed me here: http://appadvice.com/appguides/show/PDF-Readers-For-iPad

The PDFs on Flo are often quite large in size and so that might be why you’re struggling to get them all open.  The lecturers don’t scan in documents, they save their docs as PDFs.

The whole library reading system works in the same way (with PDFs formats). It is therefore becoming standard to share documents in this way. PDF files are easy to open on any device and the software required to access them is free and easy to get hold of. I agree that finding an app for your ipad which will read pdfs will be vital.  Start with Adobe Reader (it’s free) and see how you go.

    2) The app store is definitely, NOT designed just for children’s learning.  Have you explored the “productivity” section of the app store? The iPad is used by many, many business owners world wide. There is are a vast amount of applications available for all sorts of reasons and to solve all sorts of issues.

    http://itunes.apple.com/us/genre/ios-productivity/id6007?mt=8

    3) Text to speech – Another quick google returns this list: http://appadvice.com/appguides/show/text-to-speech-apps-for-ipad  Dragon is one that i’ve used on my PC and Mac.

    4)  The videos have not been optimised for mobile viewing.  They are big file sizes and they definitely were not designed to be emailed.  The university, as far as I know, currently does not pod-cast its lectures in the way I think you were hoping.  You would need to download them onto your ipad to watch them or stream them from the uni’s site to your ipad – this would require a constant data transfer and so would not be possible on the bus – unless you want a large data bill!

If these points don’t help then you know where to find me :)

  • http://twitter.com/louisaguest Louisa Guest

been using your evaluation tool to decide which apps to ditch and which to keep – certainly brings some clarity to the process!

  • http://www.teachertechnologies.com Selena Woodward

That’s great to here! I’m glad it’s doing it’s job :) I’ll work on getting our data base up. I’m wondering whether we ought to make it a living document.  It might be useful if people could keep adding to it.. What do you think.. Google Docs is usually blocked in DECD but there must be a way! ;)

    Hi Selena,
I just wanted tho thank you for your very kind generosity in sharing your ‘iPad Apps in Education’ resources. My presentation appeared to be received very well. I combined and integrated the teaching strategies of the relevant NPSfT standards and Australian Curriculum, as well as alignments to the frameworks of updated Blooms and in particular, TPACK. It appeared that these considerations, informing the scope for innovative teaching practice, especially struck a chord.
As previously indicated, I very much look forward to returning the share and maybe working with you, in the near future.
    Sean
